Steven Potts, Chief Executive of the BIAV said the economic contribution of piers around Victoria, especially in Port Phillip and Western Port Bays, is tens of millions of dollars a year, as they provide a unique link between water and activities, such as boating and fishing, involving a million Victorians annually.

The Boating Industry Association of Victoria (BIAV) has launched a statewide campaign to increase the awareness of the economic, social and health benefits of piers.

To get its message across the industry has partnered with the highly regarded street photography group Shot in the Heart of Melbourne, or SITHOM, who have taken to the water for The Essence of Piers exhibition which will be part of the Melbourne Boat Show on 12-15 June 2015.

Mr Potts said, "The Essence of Piers is also about celebrating the social and health contributions of piers, which are used by thousands of people every week for fishing or enjoying a stroll, being close to the water and the ambience of a maritime setting.

"For many children a pier is the first place where they enjoy catching their first fish."

Mr Potts said, "The Essence of Piers photographic exhibition at the Melbourne Boat Show will have an audience of some 30,000 visitors, and will anchor a wider community awareness of piers through the BIAV website and social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter.

"We are encouraging people to share their images and thoughts on piers in the digital space to create an awareness and appreciation of the unique contribution of piers, and those organisations, such as local councils and government agencies, who have a major role in both managing and maintaining this important marine infrastructure."

SITHOM exhibition coordinator and exhibitor, Emma McPherson said, "It's been tough to select the 60 images which best highlight the essence of Victoria's waterways. From boardwalks to breakwaters, wharves, jetties, piers and on water itself, the SITHOM team have focussed their attention and framed some spectacular shots."

Ms McPherson said that Melbourne Boat Show visitors may purchase a 12x16" (A3) high quality print of any of the photographs for a set price of $80+P&H.
