Federation Story - the digital time capsule of Federation Square - will be used to build a permanent digital collection of the personal stories and memories of Australians of all ages to commemorate ANZAC Day as a record for future generations and an ongoing educational resource.

Chairman of the Victorian ANZAC Centenary Committee, the Hon.Ted Baillieu, MLA, Member for Hawthorn, former Premier of Victoria, welcomed the Fed Square project saying "A major theme of the Victorian ANZAC Centenary Committee is to encourage enduring and personal connections to the first ANZAC's."

"The Federation Story Digital Time Capsule on ANZAC Day also provides an important link to the 5000 Poppies Project to be displayed at Fed Square in commemoration of Australia's 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 2015."

Jane Sydenham-Clarke from Fed Square said, "ANZAC Day is one of the most important days in Australia's social fabric and the Federation Story digital time capsule will provide easy access for the community to post their stories and comments online with photos and videos."

"We are looking to capture the memories and thoughts of the ANZAC Day Memorial march or the period leading up by younger people and children who march in memory of, or with family members, to show ongoing support for the ANZAC Spirit."

"With access from all over Australia we also want to capture the spirit of ANZAC Day from all areas of Australia including major cities, suburbs, regional cities and country towns," Ms. Sydenham-Clarke said.

"Themes of ANZAC Day stories could include personal family memories, the experience of attending the ANZAC Day march, the Shrine of Remembrance Dawn Service or a local Remembrance Service through the eyes of those who served, their family members, children, grandchildren, members of Legacy, school children attending services to the footballers who play in the traditional ANZAC Day Essendon - Collingwood clash at the MCG."

"Federation Story is an ongoing project that is actively promoted as a major educational and social media resource that can bridge the information gap locally, nationally and internationally with its personal focus and will provide a unique avenue to provide community connection to ANZAC Day."

Background
ANZAC Day's motto is 'Lest We Forget' and is a phrase uttered after the reading of the Ode of Remembrance, a poem called 'For the Fallen', written by Laurence Binyon in 1914 in England.

The main verse of the poem, the fourth and middle verse, is quoted at ANZAC Day ceremonies, and other remembrance ceremonies.

"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them."
