Archicentre and the Robin Boyd Foundation

The heritage listed home of one of Australia's most influential Architects, Robin Boyd, will be used to demonstrate the use of good residential design principles.

The campaign, between Archicentre and the Robin Boyd Foundation, was launched this morning by the Premier, Ted Baillieu, at the historic Walsh Street property in South Yarra.

The campaign will see the historical links between Archicentre and the Robin Boyd Foundation rekindled.

Robin Boyd started The Age Small Home Design Service just after the war in 1947, which was a foundation concept of today's Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Australian Institute of Architects.

The concept of The Age Small Home Design Service was to supply a full set of working drawings to people who wanted a well designed home by an architect, but who may not have had the money to hire an architect.

The service saw thousands of architect designed homes built throughout Victoria post war.

Mark Stewart, Chief Executive of Archicentre said, today Archicentre continues to provide assistance to home buyers and renovators through home inspections, design concepts and advice programs across Australia.

"Like the Robin Boyd Foundation, we have a strong interest to promote good housing design which is both affordable and sustainable. The work of Robin Boyd, who passed away in 1971, is highly relevant today with climate change, soaring energy costs and the building of lifestyle homes."

Tony Lee, architect and Executive Director of the Robin Boyd Foundation, said the link between the Robin Boyd Foundation and Archicentre would be a unique opportunity to create a wider awareness of the significant work and design approach of Robin Boyd, who had a major impact on Australian residential architecture.

Robin Boyd was "an incredibly intuitive person who understood his clients and was very empathetic to their lifestyle. The houses really reflect the way they lived."
