Dr Mark Stokes President of Kidsafe Victoria cautioned, "Parents need to be aware of the dangers associated with damaged child restraints, particularly in light of the recent floods".

"Floodwater can be highly contaminated with chemicals, sewerage, dead livestock or wild life creating a dangerous toxic and infectious environment".

"Contaminated fabric and webbing may be difficult to clean effectively. Chemicals in the floodwaters may damage the webbing and small metal components may eventually rust, both compromising the safety of the restraint".

Dr Stokes said chemical disinfectants and bleaches cannot be used as they can also damage the webbing and therefore affect the safety of the restraint.

Kidsafe recommends that flood contaminated child restraints - baby capsules, toddler seats and boosters - be discarded and replaced.

"It is important that damaged capsules, booster seats, and toddler seats are properly disposed of and not passed on to other unwary parents," Dr Stokes said.
