The Tribute will be held on Sunday evening to coincide with Nelson Mandela's Funeral in Qunu, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate's rural hometown in Eastern Cape Province.
Abeselom Nega, CEO, iEmpower and Dr Berhan Ahmed, President of Team Africa, representing the wider African community, with The Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe, Dean, St Paul's Cathedral Melbourne and Jane Sydenham-Clarke from Fed Square outlined the details of the Tribute and its importance to Melbourne's African Community today.
Commencing with a Thanksgiving Service at St Paul's Cathedral at 6.00pm, the service will move to Federation Square where images and speeches of Nelson Mandela will be played on the Big Screen. This will include vision of Nelson Mandela's visit to Melbourne.
Jane Sydenham-Clarke from Fed Square said following the singing of the Australian and South African national Anthems by the Valanga Khoza Choir and speeches by dignitaries, the African community are planning to appreciate and celebrate the life Nelson Mandela with a number of vibrant Musical and Cultural Performances including African drumming and dancing.
"The community is expecting a large attendance including many families and we are urging people, especially children, to make sure they have a rest during the day."
