Grade 6 students from Benalla 31 Primary School travelled to Melbourne today for the opening of their exhibition 'Drawing on the Broken River at Fed Square.
As part of Fed Square's Christmas program, Drawing on the Broken River features works that were produced by eighteen local students during a series of workshops funded by Arts Victoria's Artists in Schools Program with Melbourne artist, Vicky Shukuroglou.
The young artists took part in a creative drawing session and discussed their work to officially open their exhibition in The Atrium.
Drawing on the Broken RiverIn a radical departure from the 'houses and trees' drawn by most twelve year olds, Grade 6 students from Benalla 31 Primary School have produced an impressive series of more than 50 works to be shown in a free public exhibition at Federation Square.
Under Vicky's expert guidance, students were challenged to look at art in ways they had never imagined, exploring the 'nuts and bolts' of the creative process through new approaches to shape, line, texture, space and colour.
"As part of a complex and layered approach, the children are challenged with creative techniques that engage their physical and mental dexterity," Ms Shukuroglou said.
"They draw smells and sounds with their eyes closed. It is a rigorous yet open process where elements are pulled apart and reconstructed in dynamic and provocative ways which demonstrate the value of personal investigation and invention."
