Fed Square Big Screen to Move to Marysville

An alliance between Fed Square, Centacare Catholic Family Services, Regional Arts Victoria and the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust will see the Marysville community and visitors to the historic township, which is now in recovery mode from the Black Saturday bushfires, enjoy the benefits of a large screen for community events, development and cultural experiences.

Graham Brown Chairman of the Marysville and Triangle Development Group welcomed the installation of the Marysville Big Screen saying it would be a most positive contribution for residents and a major talking point and focus for the community.

Jane Sydenham-Clarke from Fed Square said the original Fed Square screen, which has largely been in storage since it was replaced two years ago, will be transported and installed in Marysville in early September in partnership with the local community.

Janet Cribbes, Project Co-ordinator Bushfire Community Recovery for Centacare Catholic Family Services, a principal project partner, said the Marysville Big Screen is aimed at providing a significant cultural, social and sporting focus providing a unique gathering place for many events over a seventeen week season.

The Marysville Big Screen opens up potential for special community activities and performances which can be exhibited on the screen.

Lindy Allen, Director of Regional Arts Victoria said with the funding support of the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust, a local Project Coordinator will be appointed to establish and manage the screen and its content and maximise its positive impact.

Organisations in Melbourne, including Fed Square, ACMI, the Arts Centre and major performing arts companies will be approached to provide a broad variety of content as determined by local demand.

The project has the capacity to support the production of material by local people, enabling them to make meaning of the experiences they've had and to draw in those who might not normally seek counselling to become part of this important healing process.

Within the broader context of the major planning issues that the residents of Marysville will be grappling with in the months ahead, including town planning, design overlays, zoning, acquiring land for the creation of community spaces and the design and management of these new spaces, the Marysville Big Screen will create a venue for the town's new leaders to bring people together, to explore each others stories and to create new working relationship on the sound basis of empathy and shared goals.
