Australian Golfing Legend Reopens Marysville Golf Course

Marysville Community Golf & Bowls Club new Putting Green

1 June 2009: Australian golf legend Peter Thomson officially reopened the Marysville Community Golf and Bowls Club on Saturday 30 May 2009.

The Marysville Golf Course sustained over $1 million damage during the Black Saturday fires on Saturday 7 February 2009.

Peter Thomson, the five-time winner of the British Open Championship was the first person out of 64 golfers to tee off on the Marysville Golf Course.

Mr Thomson brought laughter to the gathered crowd when he suggested a call be made upon the Queen to add Royal to the Marysville Golf Club name.

Before the start of the game Marysville Golf Club received a cheque for several thousand dollars from the Sandhurst Club and Links Living as the result of a special charity day organised immediately after the fires.

Mr Nick Jans, President of the Marysville Community Golf & Bowls Club said the Club had been wounded but not crippled by the fires - its Club rooms remained standing. However, it lost its machinery, watering system and other infrastructure.
