David Hallett, Victorian State Manager of Archicentre said foil insulation has made a major contribution to energy efficiency in the construction of new homes being applied to roofs under tiles or metal roofs during the building process. "However, retro-fitting it inside existing homes creates a major access issue to locate, inspect and repair faults in the roof cavities as well as some safety issues which have resulted in deaths of installers and a number of 'live' roofs." Archicentre has released a check list for home owners considering having insulation installed which urges home owners to do their homework and :   Use only an installer on the Federal Government's Installer Provider Register   Ask to see the ABN number of the company   Ask when the company was formed and who are the directors of the company  Request to view the company's public liability and WorkCover insurance policies

•   Ask for the registered company address
•   Request details of the training installers have had
•   Check that the insulation material is on the Federal Government's Approved List of Products

Mr Hallett said it is vital that home owners fully understood the implications of lining roof spaces with foil and removing the ability to inspect for potential wiring, plumbing, air conditioning, structural or termite problems.

Archicentre supports the use of insulation of all homes to save energy and improve lifestyle however there is an over-riding need to ensure it is done safely, the products are of appropriate standards and are installed correctly.
