The starting point for any successful renovation is developing the design to suit both lifestyle needs and importantly the bank balance, said David Hallett, Archicentre's Tasmanian spokesperson.

Mr Hallett said with Australian home owners spending an estimated $20 billion a year on renovations, it can be a financial trap heading off into a renovation without having both labour and material costs tied down. (Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics)

"Undertaking a renovation can be a pleasant and rewarding experience, however, renovators need to plan well ahead to avoid unexpected costs blow outs that can leave people being caught half way in a renovation being forced to borrow extra money, usually by increasing the mortgage and subsequent long term debt."

The Making Money on Renovation Workshop will trace the steps that renovators need to take to maximise the return and avoid problems.

Areas covered in the workshop include:

  •  Developing a design concept as a prudent cost saving way to kick start a building project.
  •  How to explore a range of renovation possibilities to suit people's budget and lifestyle needs.
  •  What is a concept design?
  •  How to undertake a renovation project.
  •  The key to planning and affordability based on your individual lifestyle needs.
  •  Tactics for controlling renovation costs.
