- 29 January 2003 - The tradition of piping in the Captain of the Golf Club
from the famous Royal and Ancient Club of St.
Andrews in Scotland, which has taken place for the
past 150 years, continued at Sandhurst Club in
Carrum Downs on Australia Day.
Honorary Captain of Sandhurst Golf Club, and course
designer Peter Thomson C.B.E., A.O., after being piped
to the first tee by local piper David McNamara, hit the
first ball on the new course to commence the 2003
golfing year at Sandhurst Club.
In the tradition registered caddies of the Royal and
Ancient Club vie for the right to retrieve the ball from
the fairway for a place in the history books and a gold
sovereign.
Lewis Blake wins the Honour
Lewis Blake aged ten, a future resident of Sandhurst
Club, was successful from a group of twenty five
children to gain the honour of returning the ball to
Peter Thomson.
