FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sandhurst Club Australia Day

- 29 January 2003 - The tradition of piping in the Captain of the Golf Club from the famous Royal and Ancient Club of St. Andrews in Scotland, which has taken place for the past 150 years, continued at Sandhurst Club in Carrum Downs on Australia Day.

Honorary Captain of Sandhurst Golf Club, and course designer Peter Thomson C.B.E., A.O., after being piped to the first tee by local piper David McNamara, hit the first ball on the new course to commence the 2003 golfing year at Sandhurst Club.

In the tradition registered caddies of the Royal and Ancient Club vie for the right to retrieve the ball from the fairway for a place in the history books and a gold sovereign.

Lewis Blake wins the Honour
Lewis Blake aged ten, a future resident of Sandhurst Club, was successful from a group of twenty five children to gain the honour of returning the ball to Peter Thomson.

PGA raises the Flag
A special flag raising ceremony saw the Australian, Sandhurst Club and PGA Flags raised for the first time at Sandhurst Club as Piper David McNamara played the national anthem Advance Australia Fair.

Speaking at the Australia Day event, Chairman of Sandhurst Club Joint Venture Ken Roche told Golf Club members and residents the project was on track and the plans for the $8 million clubhouse were to be finalised within the next two weeks.

Sandhurst Club already has over 450 playing members and it is aimed to have around 700 members by the time the North Course opens in the summer of 2003 / 2004.

Mr Roche reported that construction was proceeding well on the North Course with tees and bunkers being formed and sprigging of all fairways to commence in the next week.

The recycled water project with A grade water coming from the Eastern Treatment Plant would see a million buckets a day of recycled water used on Sandhurst Club golf courses is now in place ensuring the sustainability of the project.

Sandhurst Club featuring two golf courses and 1850 residences will become home to around 4500 people and already has pre-land sales of $70 million with the first homes to begin construction in February.
