Gould Calls the
Community to Action Over Australia's Native Birds
The Flight of the Blue Wren
Gould, formerly
the Gould League Australia's oldest environmental education organisation, has
turned to the internet to launch a national campaign to protect Australia's
native birds against the impact of climate change.

The move comes one
hundred years after being formed with the support of Australia's Prime
Minister Alfred Deakin to protect Australia's Birds in a campaign that
saw millions of Australian children sign the Bird Lover's Pledge in thousands
of classrooms across the nation.
Ann-Maree Colborne
CEO of Gould said, "the organisation next month will launch "The
Flight of the Blue Wren" a Gould national community awareness
project to promote an appreciation of common Australian native birds and
personal action which can be taken to limit the impact of climate change.
"Australia is home
to between 600,000 and 700,000 species, many of which are found nowhere
else in the world. About 84% of plants, 83% of mammals, and 45% of birds
are endemic - that is, they are only found in Australia."
The Department of
Environment and Water list twenty three birds as extinct, and another
forty which are endangered.
Through
The Flight of the Blue Wren
small hints on bird watching, how to attract birds to your garden and
children's activities along with information on various birds from the
Gould Collection will fly into the email inbox for enjoyment and discussion
in Australian homes and work places.

The
Flight of the Blue Wren will deliver a series of beautiful drawings
of Australian Birds including many from the internationally recognised collection
of John Gould lithographs and Australian bird artists.
These will
be delivered weekly to subscribers to The Flight of the Blue Wren
around the world and will be accompanied with a short description of the bird,
where it lives and what to look out for when bird watching.
Ms Colborne
said, with the lack of rainfall and excessive temperatures forecast to continue
birdlife in Australia will continue its migration to the city areas and be under
increasing threat
"The appreciation
of Australia's birdlife has never been more important as many of our birds are
facing extinction and unfortunately in the past one hundred years we have already
lost many species.
"Teaching children
to appreciate birdlife in their own gardens is part of developing a life long
environmental skill and understanding that is vital given the impact of climate
change on the next generation.
