Fed Square will be centre stage as the only Melbourne live
site for Australia's Earth Hour on Saturday 29 March 2008 when the
community will demonstrate concern for the environment and climate
change with a one hour switch off of lights on city buildings and
landmarks.
The Premier John Brumby and Lord Mayor John So will attend the
event at Fed Square to show support for the World Wild Life Fund
organized event.
Many of Melbourne's land mark buildings such as the Arts Centre
Spire, Flinders Street Station, St Paul's Cathedral and Government
House will turn off lighting for one hour.
Kate Brennan, CEO of Fed Square Pty Ltd, said,
"Fed Square will again demonstrate its commitment to promoting and
supporting environmental awareness by turning off its famous big
screen, electronic tickers and facade lighting during the Earth Hour
event.
"Security lighting in the Main Square, stair wells and walkways
will be maintained at a suitable level to ensure the safety of the
hundreds of people expected to attend to enjoy the free
entertainment and the countdown to the Earth Hour "switch off"
between 8pm and 9pm.
"During this time the Victorian Opera will perform to an audience
who will be given AGL mini torches to create a sparkling affect
throughout the Main Square. The entire event will be 100 per cent
powered by AGL Green Energy.
"Restaurants on site will participate by lowering non- essential
lighting or using candles on their tables.
"For star gazers, the Astronomical Society of Victoria will
install several large telescopes on site for community viewing."
Ms Brennan said, "Every day at Fed Square is 'earth hour' as the
5.2 hectare site in central Melbourne has been implementing an
ongoing environmental management plan for energy, waste and water.
"This has seen the introduction of extensive water harvesting
onsite, including roof and storm water runoff from the Square
itself, waterless urinals, use of recycled water, smart sensor
controlled lighting, and various recycling programs.
"Earth Hour at Fed Square is planned as a family event with music
and fun linked to serious environmental messages about saving energy
to lower greenhouse gas emissions and limit the effects of climate
change," Ms Brennan said.
