Peter's career with BP:
Peter started his working career in 1966 as a Plant Technologist at BP Kwinana Refinery, Western Australia. During this time he was involved with technical problem solving and plant development on the process units; training as a shift operator, carrying out overhaul preparations. Peter, in conjunction with a UK Research Officer, took out a patent on a particular mode of catalyst operation.
During 1968 and 1969 Peter was responsible for the technical aspects of commissioning the Nitric Acid and Ammonium Nitrate Plants at the Kwinana Nitrogen Company, Western Australia.
From April 1969 to April 1980 Peter spent his working career with BP in Melbourne, Australia, Singapore, and in the United Kingdom where his work involved modifying and updating the matrices used in LP computer models for oil movements and production planning throughout Australia; working at the interface between Research and Technical Development; represented the West African, Middle Eastern and Australian refineries; preparation of board papers for capital releases, obtaining appropriate technical advice from London for the associate refineries; feasibility studies for building new refineries or refining plant or producing new products; representations on Metal Trades and Electrical Trades issues with the Industrial Arbitration Commission.
Peter returned to BP Refinery in Western Australia as Operations Manager where his responsibilities included initiating plant equipment, production, problem solving, controlling emergencies and process safety. Major initiatives were in sewing the seeds of change in an area long ruled by convention (eg manning numbers, organisation and delegation of responsibility).
During May 1983 - May 1985 Peter’s next appointment was Refinery Works Manager, Westernport, Victoria, Australia where he was responsible for all aspects of refinery operation and development. At the time of taking up this appointment it was apparent because of increasing refinery competitiveness there would be either a major development or refinery closure. After six months it was decided to close the refinery. Major challenges faced by Peter was for effective performance of the refinery for a year after the closure was announced while negotiating and implementing retrenchment in an area of renowned Union militancy. The closure was effected smoothly and economically.
From May 1985 to January 1993 Peter’s roles included Refinery Works Manager, BP Refinery Kwinana, Western Australia, Supply and Shipping Manager, BP Australia, Melbourne and Refinery Manager BP Oil, Kwinana Refinery, Western Australia.
July 1993 to December 1995 as Manager, Technology Department Unit, Sunbury, United Kingdom, he managed the central engineering and research function (250 engineers, scientists and technicians) which supplies advice, support and technical direction to BP’s 15 oil refineries.
January 1996 - October 1996 Peter returned to Australia as General Manager, Manufacturing and Supply in BP Australia, Melbourne, Australia and from October 1966 to his current role as Managing Director, Kwinana Business Unit, Kwinana, Western Australia.
