Students will return in June to plant the seedlings, carry out weeding, put protective fencing in place and again photographically record changes made to the site. A follow-up visit will be made in October/November to monitor the progress of seedlings and record any losses; photograph the site again and collect seeds for germination in the school’s nursery for the following year

Wetland Rehabilitation

Lakeland Senior High School

$1200

Students have expressed an interest in returning an area to its original condition. Currently the area has been developed and consists mainly of buffalo grass. The students in consultation with the schools Aboriginal and Islander Education Workers has resulted in ideas to plant local wetland plant species which both encourage native fauna and have significance to Aboriginal people. It is anticipated that the area will also be used to improve the awareness and understanding of Aboriginal culture by providing examples of plant species which can be used as a food source or other resource (eg medicines).

Planning and Designing a Reading & Recreation area for students

Kwinana Senior High School

$1250

Through mathematics a class of year 10 students identified a suitable outdoor area for students to read or study during school hours and to use as a recreational area during recess breaks. The students have worked in a team environment and drawn to scale this area. They were required to give costs for plants, furniture, building materials, labour costs and to detail how they would raise the money. This is closely tied to the new mathematical outcome statement document which all mathematical classes have to develop.

Waste Management and Revegetation (Conservation and our Local Environment)

Belmont Senior High School

$900

partial funding

Thirty mildly intellectually disabled students from the Education Support Unit at BSHS will continue to monitor the water quality at three sites, stencilled drains and revegetate a local waterway (South Belmont Main Drain). During 1999 the classes will be asked to put white waste paper in the paper recycle box and this will be collected by the students in the Unit. A mulcher will be purchased to assist with the preparation of garden waste. Once mulched the material will be used on the revegetation site, around the school garden and for the worms. The Canteen and Home Economic areas will be asked to put their fruit and vegetable waste into a bin to be collected daily for the worms. The castings/liquid resulting from this will be used on the garden.
