Year 10 Academic Talent Programme Biotechnology Programme

Kelmscott Senior High School

$1130

Students explore the definition of Biotechnology and its vast array of applications within the community. To ensure the students can understand the manner in which genetic information is transmitted from organism to offspring, some cell biology is studied, including the use of both compound light and electron microscopy. This is followed by an in depth study of the DNA molecule, culminating in the students extracting DNA in a laboratory activity. Enzyme biochemistry is then examined with special emphasis placed on the application of enzymes in industry. Students can delve into the process of DNA profiling.

Ecological Water Purification for the Schools Aquaculture

Kojunup District High School

$1250

The cost effective ecological water purification plant will play an integral role in the success of the school farms’ conservational aquaculture centre. The purification process, in short, involves a gravitational flow through system where toxic waste water from the aquaculture runs into a hydroponic shed, then to an anaerobic algae and bacteria pond, through aerobic algae ponds and then back (as purified water) to fresh water trout pond.

Aquaculture (trout) in Salt vs Fresh Water

Denmark Agricultural College

(presentation)

$1240

Denmark College has incorporated aquaculture into its educational programme since 1994. It currently operates a small, intensive yabby/marron production unit which is used to give students an introduction to the growth, development and management of a production system and the monitoring of water quality. In 1998 two fish tanks were used for a successful trout grow out. Indications in fisheries suggest that the growth of trout in inland salt lakes is likely to become a very important profitable diversification for farmers in the Great Southern. The college wishes to give students the opportunity of having some training and experience in the possibilities of using inland salt water as a productive resource. The project is an experiment in growing trout in salt and freshwater conditions. The Project Adviser is from the fisheries department.

MRSHS Re-use and Recycling of Waste Paper

Margaret River Senior High School

$1250

When members of the Design and Technology Department saw that 6 tonne of wastepaper was sent to the local disposal tip, they decided there was an opportunity to recycle this paper in the form of compost for the school farm as well as for scrap notepads for staff and students. The students are now involved in trialling the design of the scrap note pads. Members of the P&C have taken samples of them into their own businesses. The school is now looking at further developing these pads and distributing them into the wider community.

Hydroponics at Safety Bay

Safety Bay Senior High School

$609

Students with special needs (years 8 - 10) and Horticulture trainees (year 12) will grow food hydroponically. Students will increase awareness of Science and Technology (plant requirements and technology) and Environmental Issues (planting in soil versus hydroponics). Students with special needs apply student centered learning to environmental themes. The access course for years 8 - 10 benefit from innovative processes such as hands on involvement with environmental equipment and activities. Students may be able to sell their produce to the School Canteen or Home Economic Department or use themselves.

Dowerin Industry & Commerce Net
