What is the BP Grants for Schools program?

Schools selected for the 1999 BP Grants are being presented with the awards in Queensland and Western Australia. A total of 48 schools projects have been selected this year.
BP (Australia) has been funding a wide range of innovative programs which focus on the learning outcomes of students in secondary schools. The program, in operation since 1992, has provided grants to over 150 school projects in Queensland and Western Australia.
The main objectives of the BP Grants for Schools Program are:
- to provide funding to enable schools to offer innovative projects that encourage and extend the learning of the students,
- forge closer links between industry and schools,
- form a closer partnership between BP Australia and the Education Sector and
- involve participation by members of both the school and broader community.
Grants are made in the areas of School/Industry links, Science and Technology, Environmental Issues, Health and Safety Awareness and Students with special needs. The following set of criteria are used to select projects/programs for the award of grants.
The proposal:
1. addresses one of the following areas in an innovative, school-based project or program:
- School / Industry Links
- Science & Technology
- Environmental Issues
- Health and Safety Issues
- Students with Special Needs
- (or another defined by the school as having particular relevance)
2. identifies how the project/program supports and enhances student learning opportunities and outcomes
3. provides opportunity for student input into development and evaluation
4. includes a brief outline of both long and short term benefits to the school
5. demonstrates potential benefits and/or has links with the local and the wider community
6. provides a brief outline of the implementation process and identifies the process of ongoing program evaluation
7. has been realistically budgeted and all resources have been identified including source of additional funding.
