Students from 22 schools across Queensland are celebrating tonight after winning prestigious awards from BP Australia for their entrepreneurial skills.
Education Minister Dean Wells tonight presented the BP Australia Grants for Schools Awards at the Powerhouse Hotel in Brisbane.
Each year BP Australia presents grants of up to $1,250 to Queensland secondary teachers in state and non-state schools.
The grants are awarded for projects involving community and industry links, science, technology, road safety, the environment and students with special needs.
At the ceremony, grants were awarded for the following projects:
Tara State School (Amanda Stirling) - LED Steer Project
Merrimac State High School (Annette Tanks) - Outdoor Play Equipment
Miami SHS (A. Jameson) - Sport for the Visually Impaired
Yarrabah SS (Paul Sampson) - Traditional language/English songwriting and recording
Inala Special School (Ruth Osment) - Candle making (production line
experience)
Rosedale SS (Stephen Mortimer) - Rainforest Research Area
St. Ursula’s College (Barry Mullane) - Health in the Technology Age
Mt St. Bernard’s College (Paul Michna) - Aboriginal heritage axe display,

Mr Wells said the awards encouraged activities that promoted a ‘real life’ learning context to school work and are very motivating to students.
“Tara State School, for example, has created an enterprise where students have taken on all the responsibilities of feedlotting and marketing steers.
“Mueller College students are designing and constructing moulds to recycle materials, and students with special needs are learning furniture restoration at Pioneer State High School.”
