- 19 February 2003 - Sandhurst Club, the $1 billion lifestyle development at
Skye in the City of Frankston has become Victoria's
first residential development to introduce recycled
water on a broad scale.
The Minister for the Environment and Minister for
Water, the Hon. John Thwaites officially launched the
project this morning by teeing off (see below).
Mr Stephen Head, Managing Director of the Links Group
said, "Sandhurst Club, with 1850 homes and two golf
courses, situated just four kilometres from the Eastern
Treatment Plant in Thompsons Road will be a
benchmark for recycled water in Victoria."
Over 70 kilometres of special water pipe will be laid
throughout the project to carry the recycled water,
with the first stage of 165 home sites and first golf
course lake completed.
Mr Head said that Sandhurst Club, a prestigious master
planned golfing residential project, is the first major
development in Victoria to implement a coordinated
sustainable recycled water program.
The A Class water will be delivered via underground
irrigation systems to residents' gardens. This service
will be provided free by Sandhurst Club to residents
and separate from their normal water supply.
Sandhurst residents will also be the first in Melbourne
to have the option to use free recycled water for toilet
flushing, saving 40,000 litres per dwelling of drinking
water per annum.
As thirty five per cent of all water consumed is used
on the garden, this initiative will significantly reduce
residents' water costs.
Other initiatives for Sandhurst Club include encouraging
the use of water tanks to maximise collection of rain
water and the design of water efficient gardens.
We believe the project provides a vital benchmark to
promote integrated water recycling on residential and
golf developments and is a major environmental step
forward for water conservation in Victoria at a time
when Melbourne's water storages are just over 46%
capacity, Mr Head added.
