Regional economic development in Melbourne’s West

Western Ring Road Interchange

14/04/2000

In 1995, the Western Melbourne Regional Economic Development Organisation (WREDO) was established to encourage change within the business community of Melbourne's West.

Melbourne's western region comprises a network of over 20,000 businesses and six councils encompassing utility and infrastructure organisations, major corporations, educational institutions, small and medium-sized businesses, unions, community service providers, cultural organisations and the broader community.

The western region of Melbourne covers an area of 1,333 square kilometres and incorporates the local government areas of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham.

It covers some 8 state government electorates and 5 federal government electorates and is home to over half a million people.

As a private, not-for-profit organisation, WREDO's purpose is to advance the economy of Melbourne's western region. WREDO bases its activities on three key focus areas:

  • Growing Businesses
  • Business Attraction
  • Marketing the region

As a peak regional body for economic development WREDO works co-operatively with state, federal and local government, business and the community to foster growth in Melbourne’s West.

WREDO channels its efforts into maximising business expansion opportunities and business investment in the region through a concerted program of activities, seminars, forums and projects. Simultaneously, WREDO actively promotes and markets the region both domestically and internationally, revealing the many positive benefits of doing business with and in Melbourne’s West.

This approach, combined with the persistence and individual efforts of local government and the utility companies in particular contributes to the high level of sustained and substantial commercial investment in Melbourne’s West. This investment targeted at new and emerging industries positions the West as a key economic centre in Australia.

One objective of most regional development policies both nationally and internationally is to enable a region to attain its economic potential. Determining what this potential is and developing and implementing strategies to realise this potential is a high priority for WREDO.
